April 26th: My first 22 miler ever!!

Saturday I did my very first long ride on my bike!  The furthest I had ever gone up until this point was the leisurely (but very scenic) 13 mile course we did in the Everglades a few weeks ago.  I don’t really consider that a true 13 miles because it was very stop and go and not at all a straight shot like this Saturday’s 22 miles were.

I was worried that I would be embarrassingly and annoyingly slow or that I would just zonk out towards the end but I surprised myself.  I held my own pretty well, especially considering it was my first legit intro to the road.  At one point we were averaging 19/20 mph… Unfortunately that was not the average pace of the entire ride but, my goal is to be able to maintain that pace.  Slowly but surely I’ll get there.
Our turn around point was the lovely Lake Worth Pier where we got to stop for a second and enjoy a view of the ocean and the bluest sky ever.  When we got back, Casey treated me to a very romantic brunch and we toasted the occasion with mimosas.  I did it!  And not only did I survive, I had a blast!
Brunch was followed by a trip to the ocean, a walk through an art festival and then a very well deserved nap.  The combination of exercise and heat really did us in!  Could not have asked for a better Saturday.

April 24th: Change of weeknight route!

stronger

I am happy to say that I have changed my route for 2 out of my 3 runs this week.  Rather than go the same 3 mile loop around my vicinity, I have done two 5 +/- mile runs along completely different routes.

Tonight’s run was south on A1A ending at a peer where we stretched and took a little walk to enjoy the view before heading back to our cars.  When we got back, we took off our shoes and cooled off our tootsies in the ocean before driving home.

While today was not one of my best runs, I must say that I feel myself getting stronger.  In general, I’m running faster, feeling stronger while running and becoming an all around better athlete.  This summer’s training is going to be insane!  I plan on running in the mornings when I feel most energized and get stronger through cross training day by day.

Summer vacation could not come fast enough!!!

April 22nd: Staying Hydrated

Goofin’ around with the water cooler in the teacher’s lounge today. … My water bottle (left) isn’t much smaller,  lol!

At least i can poke fun at myself 😉

April 21st: Weeknight Run with thoughts of Boston

boston marathon logo

Today, we decided to go for a run in honor of the Boston Marathon.  Around 5 miles at a steady pace.  Good conversation and great company.

We are blessed to have the health, strength, ability and safe environment to run in.  Simply put, we run because we can…. and thats reason enough. 🙂

Congrats to all those that participated!

April 19th: Heat Exhaustion = Lesson Learned

ew21

When my alarm went off at 6:30am Saturday morning for my long-run, it was thundering out.  I remember that the weather report had said it was going to be a wet weekend so I decided to sleep in and go on my run at whatever time I naturally woke up…. “If its going to be an over-cast day it won’t matter what time I go running anyway.”  I told myself.

I got my lazy butt out of bed around 8:30, leisurely got myself dressed, let the dogs out and made it to the beach for my run by around 9:30.  It was still overcast and gloomy so it was PERFECT!  “I’m going to run 9 instead of 7 today.  The weather couldn’t be better.”  I told myself.  Well… at just about mile 5 the sun decided it would burn all the clouds away and the sky would turn the most gorgeously clear color blue imaginable.

Question: Have you ever felt so hot that even your clothes feel heavy?…  Have you ever felt like the sun is literally chasing you as you’re running?… yeah, that’s how I felt.  So, I brilliantly decided to speed it up because, the faster I ran, the faster I would finish.   And I wanted to get this s*%! over with NOW.

As I got to an intersection (where I very frustratingly had to wait to cross the street) my heart rate slowed and all of a sudden my head felt like staticky television, salty sweat fell into my eyes and I started to feel a little unsteady on my feet.  Thankfully, only a little ways further, I saw a fold-out table with a water cooler on top and a dog dish on the bottom.

A local real estate office had set the water out for walkers and their dogs to entice them to take a business card and check out their listings in the area…. Thank goodness they did!  I took several big gulps and waved thank you through their glass doors without really being able to tell if anyone was there to see me.  Either way, I was very grateful.  I spent the rest of my run miserably wanting to be finished but I got through it safely.

Lessons Learned:

  1. Wake up EARLY for your runs especially during the warmer months.
  2. Even if you THINK its going to be over-cast, plan out some water stops on the way!
  3. I need to start wearing shorts for my runs because the capris I wear are WAY too hot.
  4. If I were a man, I’d totally go shirtless every time I ran.
  5. Real estate in that area is VERY expensive and I’ll have to change careers if I ever want a house on the beach because this education thing is awesome and everything but not lucrative enough to buy you property near the water.

April 15th: Suck it up, Buttercup!

suck it up

Today I’m grateful that I sucked it up and went for a run then a short bike ride afterwards despite having fleeting thoughts of skipping again.  NO MORE SKIPPING OUT just ’cause I’m tired or stressed out from work.  If I’m going to get faster and stronger I have to stay focussed.

Running makes me feel mentally better anyway, even if I do feel physically exhausted afterwards, lol.  It was a good day 🙂

April 13th: Gumbo Limbo 10K

sunrise

Today I did a 10K with my friend Caitlin.  It was an overcast, extremely windy morning and I had one too many beers at my bbq last night but, I managed to try my best and finished without falling over, LOL.

I ran at an average pace of just under 9 minute miles and really enjoyed myself.  It was a beautiful morning and I got to spend some time with friends…. can’t beat that.  This photo was taken by Casey just as the sun was rising over the ocean.

Not a bad way to spend a Sunday morning, even if you ARE running while hung-over. :-/

April 9th: Back in My Groove!!

run

So, not only did I get back in my groove and go for a run today, I ran a 5K at an average pace of 8:40 which for me is pretty good!!  As I mentioned in my previous article:

http://walkruninspired.com/2014/03/31/goals-im-committed-to/

I want to start running regularly at an average pace of under 9 minute miles… Today’s run means that I’m well on my way!

Now, if I can only extend the length of my runs at this pace…. 😉

April 7th and 8th: Lazy Funk

laziness

I am really grateful for having had such a fun and active weekend but, to be honest, Monday and Tuesday evenings were rough!

I usually change my clothes the minute I come home from work and prepare to go out for either a run or a bike ride.  But on Monday when I walked through the door of my house, the only thing I could think to do was EAT.  I was so hungry and fatigued that I ate dinner at 4:30 pm.  I told myself that I would give myself an hour to digest my food then go for a run at 5:30…. 5:30 rolled around and I was on the couch spooning with my dog Max, fast asleep.

Tuesday evening was similar.  I had all the good intentions in the world to go for a quick run before I went out to see a Panthers Hockey Game…  That only resulted in yet another early dinner and cuddle session with my yorki-poo.

Plan for Wed… bring a bigger lunch so I’m not so hungry when I get home and don’t think so much about whether or not I want to run when I get home.  Just get dressed AND GO!

April 6th: Manically Productive ;-D

beach

This morning, I ran 7.4 miles, did groceries for the week, cleaned up the back yard, folded a load of laundry, did some dishes and had my internet serviced by my provider all by 12:30pm….. whoa!!!!

I then managed to head over to the beach and sun bathed for an hour and a half, went to Whole Foods for some vitamins and lunch then stopped by Barnes and Nobel… Did some work, went for a short bike ride, ate dinner with mom then filed my taxes…. now I’m blogging to you!

I’m telling you… running in the morning is like winding me up. I’ve got energy to spare!
