February 11th: Confidence?

beauty in what you are

Have you ever just wanted to be that “hot girl or guy” who exudes awesomeness for no particular reason other than just “being”?   I think that in order to achieve this, you’ve gotta have some SERIOUS self confidence and not give a flying fig about what anyone else thinks…. and I’m not talking about “pretending” you don’t care what anyone else thinks, I mean you honestly and truly are cool what who you are, what you are and what you’re all about despite the opinions of others but NEVER at the expense of others.  Thats pretty damn sexy 😉 I wanna be that girl SO BAD!  Working on it day by day…

How to Prepare for an Out of Town Race: Tested and True Advice

luggage full and ready to travel

My running season is almost over folks!  I only have one more weekend of racing and I’ve made sure to make it EXTRA masochistic by making it a double hitter!  Yup, thats right! My sister Georgette and I are going to do TWO half marathons in one weekend in Orlando. Best Damn Race, March 1st and Swamp House Orlando, March 2nd!  Bring it, baby!

Since the races will require me to travel out of my home-town, I thought it would be a perfect time to share with you my tips on how to prepare for races you need to travel to:

Last year was the first time I ever raced out of my hometown, let alone out of state. The first race I’d ever had to spend the night at a hotel room for was the Miami Beach Allstate 13.1 last March. The commute from my home in Palm Beach County would have taken over an hour and the parking would have been a nightmare so I decided to spend a night on Ocean Drive and walked leisurely to the start line from our hotel room the morning of the race.

Although staying in a hotel the night before saved me from the panic of not getting to the starting line on time the morning of the race, it did pose some challenges of its own, namely sleeping, hydrating and fueling when you’re not in the comfort on your own home and remembering to pack everything you’ll need (because if you forget something you’re S.O.L.)

Sleeping:

Ocean Drive was an especially loud and obnoxious place to try to rest the night before running 13.1 miles. There’s nothing like the deep, pounding base of late-night club music accented by yelling drag queens and drunken snow birds to lull you to sleep, right? Since then, no other place I’ve stayed at in Miami, Chicago or Boston has been so challenging. Even the quietest of hotel rooms can be difficult, however, because you’re not in your own bed. Here are the only words of advice I can give you on the topic.

1. Go to bed early. If 9pm sounds ridiculous to you, trust me, its not. Allowing your body to lie in bed (even if you aren’t sleeping yet and have the tv on in the background) will help you rest and recharge, even if you aren’t officially knocked out.

2. Set your alarm for earlier than you think. There is nothing worse than not being able to truly rest because you keep questioning whether or not you will have enough time to get ready in the morning.

3. If possible, request a room that is nowhere near the elevator. You don’t need people walking by your room door at 4am after a night on the town.

Hydrating:

This is one that I have mastered after some trial and error. Its especially hard if you have to fly into a new city the day before a race because you will be unable to take any liquids with you from home but, it can be done.

1. Start hydrating early, one to two days before. This may mean having to buy a couple of $5 bottles of water at the airport while you wait for your plane but, what can you do?… You’re spending all this money to race out of town, what’s an extra $10?

2. Drink both water AND sports drinks/ coconut water. Miami International is probably the only airport that sells coconut water at the kiosks but, if you can get ahold of some, drink it.

3. Pack powered sports drink mix. You never know if you will be able to make a trip to the drug store for some Gatorade or Powerade when you get into your new city so, bring a few of these individual powered mixes. You can mix it up with bottled water from the hotel room or, in desperate times, tap water.

Fueling:

Nobody wants to get E.D. (Explosive Diarrhea) during any race. This is especially true for races out of town. It’s hard to eat a safe pre-race dinner at a restaurant, let alone a restaurant you may not know so well. It can also be said that it’s difficult to get enough good-quality calories to fuel you if you’ve been traveling most of the day before the race and your only options were Starbucks scones and airplane sandwiches. Here are some tips.

1. Snack/ graze lightly whenever possible on your trip into town. Eat small meals throughout the day as opportunities arise. Eat something quick before you leave the house. If they’re selling sandwiches on the plane, buy one and eat it. Don’t decide you’re going to “wait to eat a full meal once we get there.” You probably won’t have time and will end up skipping the meal entirely.

2. Plan on getting into town early enough to have a leisurely, early dinner. This will give you time to choose a place you like and be seated at a reasonable hour. You don’t want to eat too late at night and still be digesting your food the morning of the race.

3. While eating dinner, make safe choices. Nothing too greasy, cheesy, spicy or saucy. Think plain and starchy. Although it sounds counter-intuitive, sometimes its best to avoid eating pastas at restaurants because their sauces have so much fat and cream. The best restaurant meal I’ve eaten before a race was grilled salmon and jasmine rice at Legal sea foods when we went to Boston.

4. Avoid Alcohol.

5. Pack granola bars, Powerbars, Cliff Bars or your choice thereof. If the opportunity to snack does not present itself to you, you can eat one of these. If you eat dinner early you’re going to want to snack on one at night. Also, you’ll probably want to eat one the morning of the race.

Packing:

“Yes, I know that I’m a neurotic mess. But that’s why you love me.” Sincere statement I’ve made to my sister and friends before running races.

I’ve dreamt more than once that I forgot my running shoes at home or had to race in my push-up bra (don’t laugh). I am so neurotic, however, that I make sure to check and double check that I’ve paced everything I could possibly need. I won’t list the opposite but, here are some things that often get forgotten at home.

1. Charger for your watch.
2. Vaseline for your feet
3. First aid kit for blisters, etc.
4. Imodium, Pepto-Bismol or whatever you like to use to settle your stomach.
5. Advil and (as a natural alternative) turmeric for anti-inflammatory purposes.
6. Bio-freeze or Bengay
7. Sandals and dry cotton shirt for bag check. (You’ll want to change into these afterwards.)
8. Those granola bars and sports drink packets we spoke about.
9. Armband phone carrier (You’ll want to take photos with your phone and those carriers are a nifty place to hold your hotel room keys and I.D. as well.)

Extra tips on stuff you may not have thought of:

1. Ask the hotel if they’re offering special transportation to the starting line for racers. You probably won’t be the only one at the hotel participating.
2. Request a late check out if you plan on going back the afternoon of the race. You’ll want to shower and nap before you head back to the airport.
3. DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN!!!

What are your race day tips? What were your favorite destination race memories?

February 10th: I’m Wide Awake

I heard this song play on the radio on my way to work this morning and it set the tone for the rest of my day.  I’ve loved it since it came out and its been very meaningful to me.  I’m not a huge fan of music videos and I can’t even say that I would go to a Katie Perry concert but the message is amazing and I wanted to share it with you.

When you go though life’s pit falls you must learn something from the experience or else the lesson is lost.  Thankfully, I’m wide awake.

ch-ch-ch-chocolate chia!

chia 4

So, a friend of mine shared this pretty awesome recipe with me for a healthy chocolate pudding substitute!  I’d never eaten chia seeds until today and I have to say I like it!

Its extremely easy to make and pretty tasty but I’m giving you a fair warning…. its PACKED full of fiber so, a little goes a long way if you know what I mean… 😉

chia 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup of either almond or coconut milk (I used coconut water instead because I didn’t have coconut milk but I feel that it took away from the creaminess.  Follow the recipe.)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbs of cocoa powder
  • sweetener to taste such as honey or agave nectar

chia 2

Directions:

Stick it all in your magic bullet or ninja and blend the hell out of it… enjoy!

February 9th: Flowers abloom!

orchid 1

As I let Max out to the back yard this morning, a bit of purple caught my eye through all the green of the palms… I did a double take and there it was!  The orchids I grafted to the palm trees in my back yard experimentally last winter have begun to re-bloom!!

I’m so proud and amazed!  Check out the blooms and the buds that will soon blossom!

February 8th: Living on a Whim

Me... enjoying

Me… enjoying

Today, I’ve had some awesome outdoor time.  It started with a lovely impromptu breakfast at a cafe overlooking the water in Deerfield Beach.  I have to admit that walking the beach afterwards in my jeans made me very jealous of the sunbathers.  All I wanted to do was go home, get changed and head back to the water.  Unfortunately I had a 2pm  follow-up appointment with my esthetician and thought I wouldn’t have time to fit it into my day.

I thought about it for a minute and then said to myself…  what are you thinking?!  What if its overcast tomorrow?  What if I miss my opportunity and can’t go for another few weeks?  Are you really going to miss out on a gorgeous day like this after spending a whole week in a window-less office?!

So, I called to reschedule my appointment, put on my bathing suite, drove to the beach and sat my happy self down on a towel for an hour and a half.  Simple as that.  Perfection…..

February 7th: Attitude of Gratitude

all we have
Today I am grateful for having an attitude of gratitude.  (You must be thinking: Cristy, are you saying you are grateful for knowing how to be grateful? My answer is: YES!) Every morning when I get in my car, I say my prayers before I turn on the radio.  I have a lot to be grateful for and reminding myself of this puts everything in perspective at the start of my day.
I’m grateful for the health of my family, our closeness, for my job, my financial stability and for friends who love me.  I am grateful for all the twists and turns my life has taken and for all the things that God has taken out of my path for my own good.  I’m also grateful for my resilience and innate happiness.
But having an attitude of gratitude is a little more than just being grateful for what you’ve got… In my opinion it’s also about seeing the best in people and appreciating what they put forth, even if it’s less than what you’d want.  How many times have you wished a family member, a partner, a friend or even a co-worker could give you something more than what they’ve presented?  Maybe you wish they were better listeners, more generous, more consistent with their word, less argumentative, a better provider, happier, more cooperative.  But what if what they’re presenting to you is all they’ve got?
Seeing the best parts of people and overlooking what you don’t like may not be the best approach to finding a life partner but, I like the fact that I’m the kind of person who focusses on the best parts of people and falls in love that best part.  My family members and close friends sometimes drive me insane but, I focus on all the ways they contribute to my life that I just can’t live without.  I’m grateful for any and all contributions no matter how great or small in my life.   I am especially grateful when people give me little reminders of how they appreciate me too 🙂

February 6th: Starry, Starry Night

Could you see the beauty of the stars if there was no darkness?  NO.

Everything in life happens for a reason and sometimes that reason cannot be seen when things are happy and sunny and bright.  Never be afraid of the night!

February 5th: Being a Girly-Girl

being girly

For any of you that were assuming that I am the “sporty” type because I run half marathons, get stinky and sweaty and because most of my dirty laundry is comprised of running capris and dry wick shirts… I must regretfully inform you that I am, in fact, a SERIOUS girly-girl.

I can’t go to work without putting on mascara and ironing my hair, I only wear designer perfume, I collect chandelier earrings, I own several dozen pashmina shawls as well as several dozen pairs of pumps.  I LOVE getting all dressed up and I worship any woman with an hourglass figure.  I’m big on the way a woman should carry herself and I believe strongly that a woman should know how to walk elegantly in a pair of heels.

Today I got to wear something other than my school uniform to work because of a training I attended off-campus in the morning.  I didn’t dress exceptionally feminine today but, it was nice being a little more elegant than usual.  It kinda got me in the mood to get all girly-girl this weekend!  Now I just need an occasion…

February 4th: Dinner and a Movie

salmon dinner

Today I am grateful for someone to cook dinner for.  I’m pretty good about preparing myself a big pot of something over the weekend and eating it several nights in a row or fixing myself something quick and healthy on the fly after work.  What I DON’T do, however, is make myself any animal proteins when I eat alone.  (unless it comes out of a can, lol)

I acknowledge that this is silly and stupid.  Buying myself a small steak or my own fillet of fish at the grocery store is completely normal and would be a very beneficial to me but… I just don’t do it.  There is something ceremonial about making and eating a more formal meal like that.  I usually reserve that for times when I cook for someone which I LOVE to do.

In my house growing up, dinner was sacred.  No answering phones, no watching TV and no reading at the table.   We took some time to enjoy the meal my mother had lovingly prepared and talk about our day, laugh and enjoy each other’s company.  Thats what dinner is all about… eating something special and enjoying someone’s company while eating it.  On the menu tonight was salmon, broiled broccoli and white rice.  Here’s how I did it…

Salmon:

Ingredients:

  • Salmon fillet (not steaks)  I find that salmon steaks are more bone and skin than you bargained for.  Figure 6-10 oz of salmon filet per person you are serving.  Trust me, you’ll eat it.
  • Lime or lemon juice (use fresh!! don’t destroy the awesomeness of the fish by dousing it with that GARBAGE they sell in the little lemon-shaped plastic containers)
  • sea salt
  • fresh ground pepper
  • cayenne
  • Optional additions: Onion powder and garlic powder

Instructions:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees
  2. line sheet tray with foil
  3. rinse your filet of fish and pat the skin dry as much as possible and lay it skin side down directly on the foil.  This will assure that the skin will stick to the foil and easily slide off the fish.  (don’t have your fish monger take the skin off before hand.  It makes it juicy while cooking.  You just don’t want to eat it because its extra fishy tasting.)
  4. squeeze lime or lemon juice on flesh of fish
  5. season to taste
  6. Place fish in center rack of oven and check after 10 minutes.  Cook to desired temperature.  I like mine cooked through but some enjoy it a little rare in the center.

Broccoli:

Ingredients:

  • broccoli florets
  • olive oil
  • sea salt
  • fresh cracked pepper
  • cayenne (do you see a pattern here?)

Instructions:

  1. Line sheet tray with foil
  2. wash and trim florets to desired size
  3. drizzle with oil
  4. season
  5. roast at 400 degrees (below the fish i the same oven) and shake the tray frequently to make sure that all sides get crunchy.

Enjoy!!!…  Follow it up with a nice bottle of wine and a movie and you’ve got yourself a nice little evening if you ask me 🙂
