January 24th: Va-Va-Voom!

bunnyandbetty

Last night, I got the opportunity to attend the Applause for Paws and Laws event, a fund raiser sponsoring Securing Forever Homes for pets and their owners.  I was invited by my dear friend and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go.  It took place in a studio featuring the photographs of world-renown photographer Bunny Yeager who launched the career of pin-up girl Betty Page.

Here’s a picture of Bunny doing a shoot with Betty in her famous cheetah outfit.

Did you know how amazingly GORGEOUS she was herself, though?!  Check out this photo of her posing next to her own self-portrait as well as this link from nydaily that gives more info:

Well, I’ve never passed up an opportunity to get dolled up and be a girly-girl.  Here are a few pics of me and my friends looking very “va-va-voom” ourselves at the event!: (just with a little more clothing)

January 25th: Knowing How to Eat Healthy

health food medicine

As I was making myself another batch of veggie soup this afternoon, I thought about how happy I am that I know how to feed myself well.  It is so nice to be able to eat nutritious food and actually ENJOY it and not see it as being a chore.

Here are a few of my healthy OBSESSIONS:

  1. Chobani Greek Yogurt Passion Fruit on the Bottom (high in calcium and protein)
  2. Dark Chocolate (anti-oxidants)
  3. Red wine (anti-oxidants)
  4. Nature Valley Peanut Butter granola bars (high in fiber and protein)
  5. Arugula (High in Vitamins A, C, K and anti-oxidants)
  6. Tabasco sauce and Cayenne Pepper (high in vitamin A, speeds up metabolism and increases immunity.)
  7. Salmon with lots of lemon juice (Omega 3s and Vitamin C)
  8. Quinoa (high in fiber and protein)
  9. Bananas (high in potassium)
  10. Roasted Asparagus (over 100% of Vitamin K)

Why even “normal” guys online are un-dateable: Part 1

bad online dating

Several things have convinced me that on-line dating sites may not be the best forum through which to meet “normal” men.  Unfortunately, the few that you may find that ARE “normal” usually have some sort of impairment that’s difficult for a woman to overlook.  These unfortunate impairments usually fall into one of two categories1. He’s gay and doesn’t know it yet (although the rest of the world is extremely aware) or 2. He’s VERY, VERY, VERY short…. (like, shorter than YOU short)

I’ve had dates with very nice, educated, interesting men that were psychologically sound and seemed to have their lives together.  They were “normal” for all intended purposes because gay men and short men are totally and completely normal but, here’s what makes them nearly impossible for straight, average-sized, single women to date:

Category #1:  He’s gay and doesn’t know if yet (although the rest of the world is extremely aware)

When I first tried on-line dating 2 years ago, I bought a 3 month membership to a site that claimed to choose “compatible” matches for you based on how you answered a very LONG and seemingly arbitrary list of questions.  The catch was, you could not see a photo of the match until you had initiated some sort of contact with them based on their bio description, etc. etc…  Point is, it was bizarre.

After being a member for a month or so,  I was contacted by a gentleman who the site claimed was a 90 something % match with me.  We had a nice rapport over the phone, he was a professional,  well-traveled, and an animal lover… All things I could appreciate.  So, I thought I’d be open to meeting him in person.   Here’s what I learned from that brief train-wreck of a date:

  1. It just doesn’t sound right when a man exclaims emphatically “Oh, My God!  Can I just tell you how much I LOVE my cat?!”
  2. Gesticulating a lot with your hands while talking should be strictly reserved for women and Italians.
  3. While it is completely normal for a man in a relationship to refer to a woman as his “girlfriend” no straight man should/ would ever ADDRESS a woman as “girlfrieeeeend.”
  4. While it’s nice to be complimented by your date, it’s just weird when he specifies liking your handbag and pumps.
  5. No man (or woman for that matter) should EVER describe their food as being “sooooo, yummy” while eating at a restaurant unless they want a swift kick in the face (from me)…
  6. Did I mention that he really, really, LOVED his fricken’ cat?

I guess if I had seen him in person and not met him on-line I would have never gone on a date with him.  This answers the question of WHY this kind of a man has to resort to on-line dating.

January 23rd: New Adventures

life begins

Today, I am grateful for new adventures.  I have always been open to making new friends and trying new things, traveling to new places, eating new foods, learning a new skill… but I’ll admit that these things have taken a conscious effort on my part to accomplish.  I am a shy and reserved person by nature and I feel that this part of my character has impeded my growth and sense of adventure.  Lately, though, I’ve been saying “yes” to just about any opportunity that has presented itself to me.  And, you know what?… It’s been a pretty awesome experience so far.

Imagine if you were to push away all inhibitions.  Imagine if you were no longer tied up by your own self-consciousness, fear and insecurities…  What kinds of cool stuff would come into your life?

Have you ever seen a small child sing, dance and play with his/her friends?  They could not be any less interested in how they are perceived by others, no less concerned about what others are going to think or say about how they look or behave.  When, exactly, does that sense of freedom dissipate and get replaced with fear?  Why does the criticism of others have so much impact on us and who made “them” so powerful over us?

I, obviously, don’t know the answers to any of this.  What I do know, however,  is that RIGHT NOW saying “yes” is fun 🙂

January 22nd: Making Things

I make things

Today I am grateful for my craftyness.  I am thankful that both of parents taught me, through example, to experiment and be as creative as possible.  From crochet to painting, from decorating to sewing, from jewelry making to photography and cross stitch to quilting… I like to make things… Lots of things.  It makes me happy and gives me peace.

In fact… I’m going to go crochet myself an ear warmer right now… G’Night 😉

Check out a previous article I wrote about my parents and how they’ve inspired me:

New Favorite Exercises for Butt and Thighs

butt

Most women, like myself, have issues with their butt and upper thighs…. Especially us pear-shaped (or Spanish-guitar-shaped, as I prefer to be called) girls.

Here are some exercises that I’ve been doing listed order of most to least favorite.  They are fun, fast and easy to do right after a run or as a quick go-to workout when you have no time for anything else. The bonus is that they strengthen muscles necessary when running which takes the pressure off joints and ligaments… less knee and hip pain AND a better looking tush?… yes, please 🙂

Lentil Soup with (or without) Ham

lentil soup

I love making a big pot of soup at the beginning of the week and having it for dinner a few nights in a row.  This saves me the hassle of having to prepare myself dinner mid-week and deters me from eating pre-packaged or processed foods if I’m too tired to cook something from scratch when I get home from a long day.  Lentil soup is very nutritious and low in fat so it makes a great choice for weeknight meal.

Ingredients:

lentil soup ingredients

  • 16 oz package of lentils (your color of choice)
  • 8 oz package of cubed ham (optional)
  • 1 vegetable or chicken bouillon cube
  • 1 envelop of Sazon Goya seasoning (found in the ethnic aisle of the grocery store.  I use the version that has saffron for both coloring and flavor.)
  • 6-7 cloves of garlic (trust me, once it boils for a while, it mellows out and is not strong at all)
  • 1 small onion or 1/2 a large onion
  • 1 package of baby carrots diced or 2 large carrots
  • 2-3 stalks of celery
  • 1-2 bay leaves
  • 5 small sweet peppers or 1 regular sized sweet pepper (yellow, orange or red)

Directions:

  1. Rinse lentils and pick out any pebbles, etc.  Fill pot with water about 2 inches above lentils.
  2. add bouillon cube, seasoning packet, bay leaves and all diced vegetables
  3. Let come to rolling boil
  4. Add ham cubes if desired.
  5. lower to simmer and cover.  Boil for 40 minutes stirring frequently and adding water if it thickens more than you would like.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning if desired.

January 21st: Sticking with it!

never giving up!

Today I am thankful for not giving up.  You know that frustrating feeling you get when you think about how in-shape you were, how great your clothes used to fit you, how amazing you felt back in the day?…. well, I’m resolved to never feel like that ever again.

There will be no starting over because there will be no giving up.  I am deciding as of right now that I will always be “In the Best Shape of My Life”… for the REST OF MY LIFE.  Who’s with me?

January 20th: I Beat Her! (and by “her”, I mean myself)

I will beat her 2

Today I am grateful for feeling awesome!  I’m healthy, my legs and hips are not in pain and I’m thinking I might just kick some serious ass in a couple weeks at my next half marathon: The Miami Marathon and Half Marathon on Feb. 2nd (formally the ING Miami Marathon).

This running season has been epic for me so far.  I’ve been putting in some serious efforts.  I’ve been running hard, cross training, eating well, making some sacrifices, taking some chances and believing in myself more.  And its paid off!  I have improved my personal best at each race by AT LEAST 2 minutes.  And although it may seem ridiculous to some, this is the first time in 6 years of running that I sincerely consider myself “a runner.” All these years, I have felt as though I have wanted to be a runner but could not quiet classify myself as one because I just wasn’t good enough.  But, I AM good enough.  And I’m owning my awesomeness today.  🙂

Insalata Caprese with Arugula

caprese salad finished

This salad is one of my favorites.  I make it frequently for parties or get togethers because its usually a hit and always has that “wow-factor” because its so attractive.  The traditional Italian version does not call for arugula (roquette lettuce) but, I LOVE arugula for its unique kick and sneak it into recipes whenever I can. Plus, it extends the salad a little bit so you get more bang for your buck 🙂  Here’s how I make it.

Ingredients:

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe tomatoes (I use Big Boy or heirloom varieties)
  • log of fresh mozzarella
  • pack of fresh basil
  • arugula
  • olive oil
  • balsamic vinaigre
  • salt
  • pepper

Directions:

Here is another one I made for a recent girl’s night at my place

caprese salad 2

Ok, so now lets talk about the health benefits:

  • Tomatoes are insanely high in Vitamins A and C as well as lycopene and anti-oxidants.
  • Basil is rich in beta-carotenes and anti-oxidants.
  • Mozzarella is high in calcium and fat-soluble vitamins A, C and E.
  • Arugula is very rich in vitamin K, C and A
  • Olive oil is a non-saturated fat that has all kinds of health benefits.

So, eat up and enjoy!  Its not only good, its good for you.
