January 23rd: New Adventures

life begins

Today, I am grateful for new adventures.  I have always been open to making new friends and trying new things, traveling to new places, eating new foods, learning a new skill… but I’ll admit that these things have taken a conscious effort on my part to accomplish.  I am a shy and reserved person by nature and I feel that this part of my character has impeded my growth and sense of adventure.  Lately, though, I’ve been saying “yes” to just about any opportunity that has presented itself to me.  And, you know what?… It’s been a pretty awesome experience so far.

Imagine if you were to push away all inhibitions.  Imagine if you were no longer tied up by your own self-consciousness, fear and insecurities…  What kinds of cool stuff would come into your life?

Have you ever seen a small child sing, dance and play with his/her friends?  They could not be any less interested in how they are perceived by others, no less concerned about what others are going to think or say about how they look or behave.  When, exactly, does that sense of freedom dissipate and get replaced with fear?  Why does the criticism of others have so much impact on us and who made “them” so powerful over us?

I, obviously, don’t know the answers to any of this.  What I do know, however,  is that RIGHT NOW saying “yes” is fun 🙂
