May 17th: Beach bummin’

cool beach 2

Whenever I feel conflicted, confused, hurt, sad, happy, excited, thoughtful or joyous… the perfect setting has always been and will always be the beach.  No matter what sentiment, the beach is there to either drown out your thoughts with its noisy waves or accentuate your joy with its colors and movement.

I am a beach bum to the core.  Thank you God for such a gorgeous weekend!  The sun, wind and colors could not be more beautiful.  Unfortunately, the yellow flag made me too timid to go swimming.  In just a few more weeks summer vacation will be here and I’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the water 😉

April 18th: Grand Slam!!

ew3

Well, in our efforts to keep changing it up and have little adventures, we decided to go to a Marlins game this Friday.  I must admit to not being much of a baseball fan because games can be so slow-moving (and, frankly, boring).  But let me tell you… we picked quite a night to see a game!

Not only did I get to see the enormous enclosed stadium that was newly built for the Marlins for the first time but, the game was intense, fast-paced and incredibly exciting.  At the bottom of the 9th inning we won the game with a grand slam.  This was only fittingly followed by the roof of the stadium opening up and us being treated to the most intense fireworks show I’ve ever seen outside of Disney World, lol.  What a night!

March 24th: 3rd day of break, 3rd day at the beach

beach day 3

Another over-cast and cold day…. but I had to fit another trip in.  As long as its not raining, I’m going.  I have to take full advantage of my time off before I have to go back to my window-less office next Monday, lol.

March 22nd: Beach, here I come!

mom and i at beach

Let me begin by asking you something… Do I look like my mom, OR WHAT?!  LOL (she can’t deny me, thats for sure.)

I had all the good intentions in the world to wake up early and do my regular early morning long run this Saturday but… when the alarm went off at 6:30 and I heard the rain falling outside I decided to cuddle up with Max a little longer and stay comfy in my bed.

It appeared to clear up a bit by 8:30 so I called my mom and did an impromptu trip to the beach.  We only stayed for about 45 minutes because it got cold and rainy again (despite how sunny the sky appears to be in this picture, it was short lived.)

Not a bad way to start the weekend, though…. and to end my Saturday on a sweet note, dinner with my dad and step mom 🙂

March 2nd: Race #2… Mission Accomplished!

Well, we both woke up sore and tired at 5:20am this morning but neither of us let on that we thought this might be a bad idea… back to back half marathons in one weekend is pretty crazy.

Since we both put on our brave faces (and really wanted to prove that we could do this) we headed over to the Swamp House Half as planned.  It was pretty cold by our standards, around 50 degrees, and our tired muscles and joints were stiff as boards but when the blow horn sounded we were off.

The conversation was good, the company was the best and the adventure was epic.  I love my little sister and our crazy antics.  It was a fun race and the after party was lively and delicious!  Where else do you get unlimited IPA beer and jambalaya included in your race entry?!  Oh, and did I mention that they gave us a little swig of beer at mile 12 just to give us the motivational boost we needed to finish?  Fun times!

Amazing finale to an amazing race season.  I am so proud, happy and ready to train for next season’s goal: HALF MARAHON UNDER TWO HOURS!!

February 24th: 5 days to go!!

swamp and best

My crazy 1/2 marathon double-hitter weekend is quickly approaching, folks!  This Saturday, I will be running the “Best Damn Race” followed by Sunday’s “Swap House 1/2 marathon” in Orlando!

Crazy?… yes…. Crazy Awesome!  What better way can you think of to end an amazing running season?!  I’ve had some amazing runs, some disappointments, hit some personal records and over-all feel that I have finally come into my own as a runner.

My sister and I are psyched but a little freaked out to say the least!  We will be doing Saturday’s race for time but Sunday’s race for fun…  The Swamp House race has a really fun after party we are looking forward to the entertainment, food and endless FREE BEER to celebrate our hard work!  (We are also planning on celebrating Mardi Gras in one of Orlando’s many great hot spots so, the weekend will be a non-stop thread of manic running and shenanigans.  Just the way we like it!)

Blowing Rocks Preserve, Jupiter, Florida

j14

As if the art festival wasn’t enough adventure for one day, I was treated to another amazing trip to a state park by my friend Casey who is in “the know.”

As per http://www.nature.com:

Rock formations at Blowing Rocks Preserve are the largest of their type on the Atlantic coast.  Winter storms and extreme high tides offer the best opportunities to see the Conservancy’s Blowing Rocks live up to their name. In a scene more reminiscent of Hawaii than Florida, waves surging against the craggy limestone shore can force geysers of water as high as 50 feet into the air.

Though the dark, jagged rocks do – at first glance – look like the remains of a misplaced lava flow, they are actually a specific type of sedimentary rock called Anastasia limestone.

Scientists disagree on exactly how far inland the limestone extends, exactly when it was formed (most likely around 120,000 years ago, in the Pleistocene Age) and whether it was formed by a single event or by multiple changes in sea level.

A few things scientists can agree on:

  • Anastasia limestone extends along Florida’s coast from St. Augustine to Boca Raton, and
  • Blowing Rocks Preserve harbors the largest outcropping on the U.S. Atlantic Coast.

The exposed rock at the preserve is unusual, not because Anastasia limestone is particularly rare, but because it is commonly found either underground or underwater.

Also known as coquina, from the Spanish for cockleshell, Anastasia limestone is composed primarily of shell and coral fragments, fossils and sand. Small fossils are clearly visible in the rock faces, most commonly the shells of small clams and oysters or pieces of a large snail called Busycon.

Why is so much of the limestone above ground at Blowing Rocks? No one knows. The land here might have once been part of an exposed sand ridge or the top of a reef, or for some other reason higher than surrounding areas.

At their height in winter, the Blowing Rocks are worth a visit in every season. The wind- and wave-carved limestone forms chimneys and shelves, burrows, blow holes and rocky pools. These offer great opportunities for exploration and imagination, as well as a rare window into Florida’s natural history.

January 26th: Nature

Or this gorgeous sunset :)

After being stuck in a window-less office 5 days a week, I actually look forward to waking up early weekend mornings for my runs.  Not for the exercise, but just to spend some time outdoors, breathing in fresh air, getting some vitamin D from the sun and enjoying the feel and smells of everything.

This Sunday, I spent the ENTIRE day outdoors and had a blast.  A friend and I hiked 6+ miles through Estero State Park on Florida’s western coast then enjoyed a lovely sunset on Sanibel Island.  Shameful to say but, I’ve lived in Florida almost my entire life and had never been to this location only 2 hours away from my home!  It was lovely and I got to see so many fun and interesting things.  Enjoying it with a kind soul is always a bonus 🙂

January 19th: Being Outside

blue sky

I must say I had a pretty amazeballs day….  It started off with Max’s first trip to the dog beach with a friend and his dog, breakfast outdoors and a great little walk through an art festival.  THEN I made up for the run I missed yesterday right smack in the middle of the day!  When else in Florida can you run 9 miles at noon and not die of heat exhaustion?!  To be honest, it was so nice out I barely felt myself sweat!  The icing on the cake was an impromptu dinner-date with my dear childhood friend.

Gorgeous blue skies, great company, getting some mileage in, hanging out with your girlfriend, spicy Chinese food AND a frou-frou drink to top it all off?!  What else can a girl ask for?
