Wine Crate Herb Garden

I’m a creature of habit.  I have little routines that I look forward to and that bring me joy. My favorite of these is sleeping in and drinking coffee in bed while watching FoodNetwork on Sunday mornings.
Charlie, Max and I have a grand old time just cuddling, napping and caffeinating.  My favorite shows are those that show the host in his or her home, preparing a fun meal for the friends that will be coming over to celebrate the event they’re supposedly planning. I sit and fantasize about all the parties I could host and serve this or that dish at or how I could make this dish better or what I would add or omit from the other.
Sometimes, I get ideas for things that have nothing to do with cooking at all, such as decorating, party themes or, as was the case a couple of weeks ago, gardening.  One host showed how she used a box frame as a shelf in which she placed her planted herbs.   I’ve been ruminating on that one for a while… then Saturday it hit me!  Here’s what I came up with 🙂
Materials:
  • I went to my local wine superstore and purchased some wooden wine crates for $5 each.  Most wine stores either give these away or sell them to patrons who want to use them as gift boxes, etc.  You may have to ask a store clerk where they’re located for purchase or if you can just have them for free!
  • Variety of potted herbs (I got mine on sale, 5 for $10!)
  • clear spray paint with matte or satin finish
  • ring hangers, 2 hangers for each planter box.

Here’s how I put it all together:

May 3rd: Pre-Race Jitters :-\

As is tradition, on Saturday I was freaking out the day before my Sunday race.  “I’m coming down with something.”  “I think I have a sore throat.”  “I may have an ear infection or it may be water in my ear from the beach yesterday.”  I’m exhausted.”  “My knees hurt.”  ……

What the hell is wrong with me?!  I’m not only a nervous wreck because I want to do well on my races but this time I became a hypochondriac!  LOL.

I legitimately felt tired so I ended up taking a 2 hour nap in the middle of the day which is COMPLETELY out of character for me.  I loaded up with zinc lozenges, water, coconut water, ate well and went to bed early hoping for the best and expecting the worst… ;-\

I was grateful, however, that I was able to go to rest and have no worries other than a silly little race.  Life is good and I was excited for the following day’s activities….

May 1st: More Orchids!

New blooms from my lovely garden!

April 30th: Shorts!… ’cause its too hot for capris, lol!

shorts

Okie dokie pokie…. I gave in and bought myself some running shorts to replace my standard capri running pants.  I have refused to wear shorts to run in for years because they ride up and don’t feel as comfortable as capris.  Also, I’ll admit that I’ve always struggled with my body image and my upper thighs are my trouble spot!

The unbearable heat and my new “who-gives-a-crap-what-I-look-like-as-long-as-I’m -comfortable” attitude has helped me decide to go ahead and get myself a pair.  I went for an experimental run with these non-name-brand shorts that I just bought at Marshall’s for only $12 and am pretty happy!… No riding up and my legs are able to breath.  I even felt lighter and faster, lol!!!  Bonus:  My bike ridding tan lines will now match my running tan lines.  😉  Summer, I’m ready for ya!!!!

April 29th: Tortilla Espanola!

tortilla

Today I’m grateful for the opportunity to cook for someone and enjoy a lovely meal…In Spain a “tortilla” is an omelette, not a flat bread you stuff with beans and rice.  😉 A tortilla espanola is the most traditional and basic of these omelettes which are traditionally served as “tapas” or appetizers.  I make tortillas as my main dish on days that I don’t feel like making meat but want a non-soy source of protein.  Its delicious, easy, quick and impressive looking.

Here’s how I made mine!

Ingredients:

tortilla 3

  • olive oil
  • 8 eggs beaten and seasoned with salt and pepper
  • 1 large red potato or 1 average sized Idaho potato
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion sliced

Directions:

  1. Slice potato into small pieces and boil in water until tender
  2. in a deep frying pan, sautee sliced onions until translucent
  3. toss in cooked potatoes and lower heat to simmer
  4. pour in eggs and cover.
  5. Cook over low heat covered until bottom of omelette is golden.
  6. Flip and cook on other side until just done.
  7. Enjoy!!

I served mine with simple roasted asparagus and whole wheat baguette… and red wine of course!!

April 28th: My Garden

bike 10

I’m so very proud of everything growing in my back yard right now.  More plants are popping up in bloom and those that are already in bloom just seem to stay beautiful indefinitely.  My “mystery bulb” is sprouting, my avocado is getting huge, my orchids are gorgeous…  I just go back there every evening and spend time inspecting things and picking up fallen palm fronds….

Next project:  Gotta get that pesky bougainvillea to flower.  I haven’t seen a bloom from it since my gardener trimmed it down to a stump 2 years ago (I may have mentioned this once before.)  Any advice on how to get it to flower????

April 27th: Super Pup to the rescue!

bike 9
We were invited to attend my friend Rosemary’s birthday party on Sunday and COULDN’T pass up the theme…  Super Heroes.  I mean, come on people!  What other 32 year old woman do YOU know wants a super hero-themed birthday party complete with costumes and games?
Dogs were welcome so even Casey’s dog, Riley, got in on the action…  Here he was driving us to the party in his little blue cape. 😉

April 24th: Change of weeknight route!

stronger

I am happy to say that I have changed my route for 2 out of my 3 runs this week.  Rather than go the same 3 mile loop around my vicinity, I have done two 5 +/- mile runs along completely different routes.

Tonight’s run was south on A1A ending at a peer where we stretched and took a little walk to enjoy the view before heading back to our cars.  When we got back, we took off our shoes and cooled off our tootsies in the ocean before driving home.

While today was not one of my best runs, I must say that I feel myself getting stronger.  In general, I’m running faster, feeling stronger while running and becoming an all around better athlete.  This summer’s training is going to be insane!  I plan on running in the mornings when I feel most energized and get stronger through cross training day by day.

Summer vacation could not come fast enough!!!

April 23rd: My chocolate fix continues

chocolate 2

Today, Casey picked up a special treat for dessert to enjoy after the dinner I made us!  “Chocolate Mayday” a limited edition beer from Salt Water Brewery in Delray Beach not far from the town where we live.

Got home late after some meetings, got changed, went for my run, showered, cooked then enjoyed….Not a bad way to top off a Wednesday 😉  Now that lent is over, I’ll take chocolate in any way possible.

April 22nd: Staying Hydrated

Goofin’ around with the water cooler in the teacher’s lounge today. … My water bottle (left) isn’t much smaller,  lol!

At least i can poke fun at myself 😉
