May 4th: Wings for Life World Run

world run 1

Sunday I got to participate in an amazing event!  The Wings for Life World Run in Sunrise, Florida.  The event took place in over 30 locations and had over 35,000 participants throughout the world running at the SAME TIME.  The race started in different time zones (obviously) so race start times differed per country but we all started at the same time and ran in honor of those who couldn’t.  The event raises awareness and funds for those with spinal cord injuries and 100% of the proceeds from the registration fee goes to this amazing cause.  Here’s more info on the event:

The concept of the race is unique.  Rather than run towards the finish line… the finish line catches up to you!  You must run at a certain pace to hit certain mile markers because once the “finisher car” passes you with its censors (like the timing strip you run over at the finish but just mounted to the car), your time is stopped.  My goal was to run at least 9 miles before getting passed.  Considering the hypochondriacal, neurotic fit I was having Saturday, I arrived at the start not knowing if I would even complete my original goal.  Once I met up with my co-worker who invited me to join her in the race, I was began to feel a little better but was still hesitant.

Once we started, I hit my stride pretty quickly.  I was calm, well paced and feeling energized.  By mile 5 I was beginning to think “I got this…  I only have 4 more to meet my goal and I’m feeling pretty good.”

By mile 6 a short gentleman about my age, wearing crazy metallic shorts and neon compression socks started to run along side me me.  My thoughts at this point were… “what the hell, guy?!”

By mile 7, me and the short guy were running the exact same pace, never saying a word to each other.  We were approaching a water station and all of a sudden a highlighter-yellow-colored piece of paper seemed to flutter out of no where from the sky and landed in front of us on the pavement.  We both looked at it and realized it wasn’t a piece of paper at all… it was someone’s escaped pet parakeet!  I’d never seen one so neon colored in my life.  Me and little dude just turned to each other and exclaimed simultaneously “What the hell?!” and laughed.  That was pretty cool so, I decided it was a good omen that this was going to be a kick ass race and that little dude was pretty cool.

By mile 8 I didn’t even feel myself running anymore and was now on auto-pilot.   The world was just passing by.

By 9.5 I passed Casey who was waiting with the camera.  I was having the run of my life… I was averaging 9:02 and feeling great.  I wasn’t even thinking about the finisher car that was creeping up slowly behind us all.  My random running buddy and I were pumping each other up… “yeah!  We’ll be able to finish a half for sure!  We’re killing it.”

Before I knew it, it was mile 11… and that’s when it happened.  A guy on a bike rolled by and warned us.  “Its coming guys.  I see it about a quarter mile away.”  We decided to push a little harder.  “Lets give it all we got!”

Suddenly, my running buddy shouts, “Ok, lets book it!”  I turned to him and told him I was at max capacity and couldn’t go any faster…  “Turn around!”  He told me as he bolted off.  And there it was… the car!  I squealed as though this were the zombie apocalypse (yeah, I’m obsesses with Walking Dead, whatever!)  and I was getting chased by a walker.  I booked it! But not for long…  I proudly finished 11.43 miles before my race was over.

But here’s what I’m so excited about…  I calculated that if I had continued at my pace of 9:02 for 13.1, I would have finished a half marathon at 1:58!  Safely under 2 hours which is my goal for next season.  I got it in me baby!! woooohoooo!!!  I’m STILL beaming with excitement and pride.

May 3rd: Pre-Race Jitters :-\

As is tradition, on Saturday I was freaking out the day before my Sunday race.  “I’m coming down with something.”  “I think I have a sore throat.”  “I may have an ear infection or it may be water in my ear from the beach yesterday.”  I’m exhausted.”  “My knees hurt.”  ……

What the hell is wrong with me?!  I’m not only a nervous wreck because I want to do well on my races but this time I became a hypochondriac!  LOL.

I legitimately felt tired so I ended up taking a 2 hour nap in the middle of the day which is COMPLETELY out of character for me.  I loaded up with zinc lozenges, water, coconut water, ate well and went to bed early hoping for the best and expecting the worst… ;-\

I was grateful, however, that I was able to go to rest and have no worries other than a silly little race.  Life is good and I was excited for the following day’s activities….

April 30th: Shorts!… ’cause its too hot for capris, lol!

shorts

Okie dokie pokie…. I gave in and bought myself some running shorts to replace my standard capri running pants.  I have refused to wear shorts to run in for years because they ride up and don’t feel as comfortable as capris.  Also, I’ll admit that I’ve always struggled with my body image and my upper thighs are my trouble spot!

The unbearable heat and my new “who-gives-a-crap-what-I-look-like-as-long-as-I’m -comfortable” attitude has helped me decide to go ahead and get myself a pair.  I went for an experimental run with these non-name-brand shorts that I just bought at Marshall’s for only $12 and am pretty happy!… No riding up and my legs are able to breath.  I even felt lighter and faster, lol!!!  Bonus:  My bike ridding tan lines will now match my running tan lines.  😉  Summer, I’m ready for ya!!!!

April 26th: My first 22 miler ever!!

Saturday I did my very first long ride on my bike!  The furthest I had ever gone up until this point was the leisurely (but very scenic) 13 mile course we did in the Everglades a few weeks ago.  I don’t really consider that a true 13 miles because it was very stop and go and not at all a straight shot like this Saturday’s 22 miles were.

I was worried that I would be embarrassingly and annoyingly slow or that I would just zonk out towards the end but I surprised myself.  I held my own pretty well, especially considering it was my first legit intro to the road.  At one point we were averaging 19/20 mph… Unfortunately that was not the average pace of the entire ride but, my goal is to be able to maintain that pace.  Slowly but surely I’ll get there.
Our turn around point was the lovely Lake Worth Pier where we got to stop for a second and enjoy a view of the ocean and the bluest sky ever.  When we got back, Casey treated me to a very romantic brunch and we toasted the occasion with mimosas.  I did it!  And not only did I survive, I had a blast!
Brunch was followed by a trip to the ocean, a walk through an art festival and then a very well deserved nap.  The combination of exercise and heat really did us in!  Could not have asked for a better Saturday.

April 24th: Change of weeknight route!

stronger

I am happy to say that I have changed my route for 2 out of my 3 runs this week.  Rather than go the same 3 mile loop around my vicinity, I have done two 5 +/- mile runs along completely different routes.

Tonight’s run was south on A1A ending at a peer where we stretched and took a little walk to enjoy the view before heading back to our cars.  When we got back, we took off our shoes and cooled off our tootsies in the ocean before driving home.

While today was not one of my best runs, I must say that I feel myself getting stronger.  In general, I’m running faster, feeling stronger while running and becoming an all around better athlete.  This summer’s training is going to be insane!  I plan on running in the mornings when I feel most energized and get stronger through cross training day by day.

Summer vacation could not come fast enough!!!

April 21st: Weeknight Run with thoughts of Boston

boston marathon logo

Today, we decided to go for a run in honor of the Boston Marathon.  Around 5 miles at a steady pace.  Good conversation and great company.

We are blessed to have the health, strength, ability and safe environment to run in.  Simply put, we run because we can…. and thats reason enough. 🙂

Congrats to all those that participated!

April 19th: Heat Exhaustion = Lesson Learned

ew21

When my alarm went off at 6:30am Saturday morning for my long-run, it was thundering out.  I remember that the weather report had said it was going to be a wet weekend so I decided to sleep in and go on my run at whatever time I naturally woke up…. “If its going to be an over-cast day it won’t matter what time I go running anyway.”  I told myself.

I got my lazy butt out of bed around 8:30, leisurely got myself dressed, let the dogs out and made it to the beach for my run by around 9:30.  It was still overcast and gloomy so it was PERFECT!  “I’m going to run 9 instead of 7 today.  The weather couldn’t be better.”  I told myself.  Well… at just about mile 5 the sun decided it would burn all the clouds away and the sky would turn the most gorgeously clear color blue imaginable.

Question: Have you ever felt so hot that even your clothes feel heavy?…  Have you ever felt like the sun is literally chasing you as you’re running?… yeah, that’s how I felt.  So, I brilliantly decided to speed it up because, the faster I ran, the faster I would finish.   And I wanted to get this s*%! over with NOW.

As I got to an intersection (where I very frustratingly had to wait to cross the street) my heart rate slowed and all of a sudden my head felt like staticky television, salty sweat fell into my eyes and I started to feel a little unsteady on my feet.  Thankfully, only a little ways further, I saw a fold-out table with a water cooler on top and a dog dish on the bottom.

A local real estate office had set the water out for walkers and their dogs to entice them to take a business card and check out their listings in the area…. Thank goodness they did!  I took several big gulps and waved thank you through their glass doors without really being able to tell if anyone was there to see me.  Either way, I was very grateful.  I spent the rest of my run miserably wanting to be finished but I got through it safely.

Lessons Learned:

  1. Wake up EARLY for your runs especially during the warmer months.
  2. Even if you THINK its going to be over-cast, plan out some water stops on the way!
  3. I need to start wearing shorts for my runs because the capris I wear are WAY too hot.
  4. If I were a man, I’d totally go shirtless every time I ran.
  5. Real estate in that area is VERY expensive and I’ll have to change careers if I ever want a house on the beach because this education thing is awesome and everything but not lucrative enough to buy you property near the water.

April 17th: Running Violations!

20140416-194346.jpg

This is amazing, lol. My favorite is #9!

I would like to add:

11) wearing a CamelBak in ANY setting other than an ultra marathon or the middle of the fricken’ desert – $150.00

12) running in full make-up, perfume, cologne and/ or jewelry – $50.00

13) use of tutu during a legit half or full marathon (in any location other than Disney World, where that is not only ok but expected, lol)- $25.00

April 15th: Suck it up, Buttercup!

suck it up

Today I’m grateful that I sucked it up and went for a run then a short bike ride afterwards despite having fleeting thoughts of skipping again.  NO MORE SKIPPING OUT just ’cause I’m tired or stressed out from work.  If I’m going to get faster and stronger I have to stay focussed.

Running makes me feel mentally better anyway, even if I do feel physically exhausted afterwards, lol.  It was a good day 🙂

April 9th: Back in My Groove!!

run

So, not only did I get back in my groove and go for a run today, I ran a 5K at an average pace of 8:40 which for me is pretty good!!  As I mentioned in my previous article:

http://walkruninspired.com/2014/03/31/goals-im-committed-to/

I want to start running regularly at an average pace of under 9 minute miles… Today’s run means that I’m well on my way!

Now, if I can only extend the length of my runs at this pace…. 😉
